“CPP is the most well-established intervention for treating trauma in infants and toddlers.”

2026 research review of interventions for young children exposed to trauma

Overview

From tightly controlled randomized control trials (RCTs) to ongoing clinic-based research, our science shows that CPP promotes healing for caregivers and children exposed to trauma.

  • Led by CPP developers at UCSF, two RCTs demonstrated the efficacy of CPP in healing attachment and reducing child mental health problems.
  • An independent research team at the Mt. Hope Family Center at the University of Rochester trained by CPP developer, Alicia F. Lieberman, conducted three RCTs that replicated and extended these findings.
  • At UCSF, researchers continue to advance science on Perinatal CPP, an extension where CPP begins during pregnancy to support postnatal wellbeing for caregivers exposed to stress.
  • Innovative multidisciplinary studies bridge the gap between adversity, psychotherapy, and biology, showing how CPP gets under the skin to promote health.
