Defendamos a Los Niños, América

Son las cuatro de la mañana y debería estar durmiendo pero no lo estoy. Al igual que muchos de ustedes, estoy procesando las noticias y me agobia el que estemos separando a niños de sus familias. Estamos almacenándolos en lugares donde no hay suficientes adultos que les brinden amor para ayudarlos a sentirse seguros. Se encuentran rodeados por cercas alambradas, quizá se sientan enjaulados como animales o criminales, aunque ellos también merecen algo mejor. Y ahora escucho que tienen frío. Niños con frío, con hambre, cansados y asustados sin brazos cariñosos que los arrullen y abracen.

Estamos rompiéndoles el corazón y rompemos el nuestro al mismo tiempo. Estamos haciendo esto y sabemos que está mal.

Son las cuatro de la mañana y debería estar durmiendo o quizá no. Los niños no están durmiendo, no están bien y esto es algo que nuestro país está haciendo. Tal vez todos necesitemos despertar, sabemos que esto está mal y no se necesitan ni investigaciones ni profesionales en el campo de salud mental para comprobarlo. Cuando vemos lo que pasa nuestros cuerpos pueden sentirlo, nos pesa el corazón, se nos revuelve el estomago. Así es como nos hace sentir aquello que está mal. Si tenemos que voltear a otro lado para lidiar con los sentimientos que nos causa entonces sabemos que no está bien.

Sí, es cierto que hay muchas cosas en nuestro mundo que nos hacen sentir así. Es muy fácil sentirse abrumado por las olas de dolor y horror causadas por la humanidad. Pero esta vez necesitamos mirar, necesitamos sentir el dolor porque nosotros lo estamos causando. Si tú te consideras americano o americana (y yo sí), entonces esto se está haciendo en nuestro nombre.

Y la verdad es que, como alguien me lo señaló alguna vez, estos niños son americanos también. Puede que sean de América Central o de Sudamérica, pero son americanos y necesitamos reconocer que el dolor viaja al igual que la contaminación. En una era en la que podemos ir alrededor del mundo en un día, en la que un mensaje es enviado en un segundo, ¿qué nos hace creer que el dolor se queda en donde comenzó? El dolor no se quedará contenido detrás de muros o fronteras o de cercas alambradas. Es posible que pase tiempo antes de que se propague pero para entonces desearemos haberlo detenido antes porque veremos que hemos forzado a aquellos niños, a nuestros hijos y a nuestros nietos a lidiar con las consecuencias del dolor que nosotros creamos.

Nuestros hijos y nietos verán imágenes y escucharán historias sobre cómo nosotros, el pueblo de los Estados Unidos de América, le hizo daño a niños. Y cuando ellos se den cuenta de esta realidad, ya que estará en los libros de historia, se harán una simple pregunta: ¿Por qué?

Cada uno de nosotros necesita imaginarse cómo responderemos, y si tienes una respuesta que te permita respaldar esto o mantenerte pasivo mientras esto pasa, piensa profundamente si esa respuesta resistirá el paso del tiempo. Piensa profundamente cómo la defenderás en tu lecho de muerte y más allá. También piensa en aquellos que han separado a niños de sus padres, aquellos que trabajan en la frontera y que han sido instrumentos de actos crueles. Si ellos aún no son padres, imagínalos como padres primerizos, sosteniendo a su hijo amorosamente en sus brazos. ¿A caso la argumentación política les permitirá justificar lo que hicieron? O, al mirar a un niño a los ojos otra vez, ¿se sentirán abrumados por el dolor desgarrador de lo equivocado? ¿Su paternidad y sus familias se verán manchadas por sus acciones pasadas?

Ya sé que no necesitamos investigadores o profesionales en salud mental para saber que esto está mal, sin embargo yo soy ambas cosas. En más de dos décadas de trabajo como investigadora, terapeuta, supervisora, asesora e instructora trabajando con niños menores de 6 años que han experimentado trauma, se me han confiado más de 1000 historias de más de 1000 familias alrededor del mundo. Todo lo que la investigación, otros expertos y las familias me han enseñado es lo que me hace saber que lo que estamos haciendo está mal.

Esto es lo que las familias y sus historias me han enseñado, cuando somos pequeños y los adultos nos lastiman o fallan al protegernos y no es reconocido y reparado, las consecuencias perduran. A falta de otras relaciones protectoras y de otros modelos de relaciones, estas experiencias nos enseñan que “así son” las relaciones; la gente nos deja, puede que nos hagan daño, no podemos confiar en otros. Estas experiencias también definen la forma en la que podríamos responder a las siguientes preguntas: ¿Soy capaz? ¿Soy valioso? ¿Inspiro ser amado? Cuando el daño es amplificado por la sociedad entonces de verdad estamos desamparados, estamos sin refugio, sin protección, sin un modelo saludable de como merecemos ser tratados.

Como terapeutas en trauma infantil, mis colegas y yo pasamos nuestros días reparando daño. Colaboramos con familias, escuchamos historias de niños que han sido dañados. Escuchamos historias sobre la forma en la que nuestros sistemas apoyaron o le fallaron a las familias. También escuchamos las historias de aquellos que han lastimado a otros. Atormentados por sus propias acciones algunos buscan apoyo para ayudar a sus familias a superar el dolor y el daño y así sentir seguridad y conexión. Es un trabajo difícil pero hermoso. Cuando los niños pueden compartir sus experiencias sinceramente con alguien que los ama, cuando se les reúne con brazos amorosos que ahora los abrazan y protegen, ellos florecen. Cuando los padres reconocen a profundidad sus experiencias propias y las de sus hijos, logran respirar y son capaces de criar a sus hijos de una forma que quizá ellos no hayan conocido de niños. El sentimiento en nuestros cuerpos pasa del dolor y la separación a la conexión y la esperanza.

En todo el país empezamos a escuchar historias de los niños que han sido separados de sus familias. Estamos trabajando para reparar el daño que nunca debimos haber causado. En los siguientes 20 años, esperamos también escuchar las historias de las familias del otro lado de esta tragedia, aquellos que separaron niños en la frontera, aquellos que trabajaron en los centros de detención. Es difícil hacer daño o ser testigo del daño causado a niños y no desarrollar TEPT (Trastorno de Estrés Postraumático).

Nosotros lo que hacemos este trabajo también llevamos la carga del dolor causado por esta violencia social. Estas acciones políticas están rompiendo los corazones de niños y familias, y rompen el nuestro al mismo tiempo. Terapeutas, maestros, profesionales médicos, trabajadores del sistema de bienestar infantil, abogados, personal de la corte y muchos otros de nosotros también estamos pagando el precio de estas políticas y yo imagino que seguiremos pagándolo por décadas.

El propósito de la sociedad es proteger a sus miembros. A lo largo de la historia, hemos trazado líneas definiendo a quienes consideramos dentro de nuestro círculo y quienes deberían estar bajo nuestra protección. Pero es seguro que dentro de nuestras creencias fundamentales coincidimos en que los niños son el futuro de nuestro mundo y es nuestra responsabilidad como adultos buenos y afectuosos protegerlos, o al menos no dañarlos.

Son las seis de la mañana y tal vez esos niños que llevamos en el corazón se están despertando, si es que pudieron dormir algo en el piso frío y duro. Merecen tener a alguien que les diga que la pesadilla se acabó o por lo menos que, aunque los adultos tengamos nuestros grandes desacuerdos, todos coincidimos en que los niños son muy preciados. Ellos son nuestro futuro y trabajaremos juntos, reflexionando profundamente, para hacer que sus vidas y nuestro mundo sean más humanos y más bondadosos. Hacemos esto por el bien de los niños que están sufriendo y por el bien de nuestros propios hijos que también llevarán la carga de este dolor causado por la humanidad. Estamos abogando por los niños.

Escribo esta carta para representar las voces de mis colegas e invito a aquellos de ustedes que comparten estos puntos de vista a que firmen abajo y agreguen su voz a la nuestra. Compartan esta carta con los políticos que los representan y agreguen sus opiniones. Háganles saber que como personas en la profesión dedicada a la asistencia, aquellos que trabajan en el frente para ayudar a familias a sanar del trauma, no nos quedaremos callados ni dejaremos que la crueldad suceda. No nos quedaremos callados mientras nuestra sociedad abusa y lastima niños. Ellos no lastiman niños en nuestro nombre. Nosotros no apoyamos políticas que causan daño a niños, no apoyamos a aquellos que las redactan, que votan a favor o que implementan políticas que causan daño a niños.

Stand for Children, America

It’s 4 am, and I should be sleeping, but I’m not. Like many of you, I am taking in the news, and I am overwhelmed that we are separating children from their families. We are warehousing them in places where there aren’t enough loving adults to help them feel safe. They are surrounded by chain-link fences. Perhaps they feel caged, like animals or criminals, although they too deserve better. And now I hear that they are cold. Cold, tired, hungry, scared children without loving arms to hold and rock them. We are breaking their hearts and ours at the same time. We are doing this, and we know it is wrong.It is 4 am, and I should be sleeping, or maybe not. The children are not sleeping. They are not ok, and this is something that our country is doing. Maybe we all need to wake up. We know this is wrong. We don’t need research or mental health professionals to prove this. When we see what is happening, our bodies feel it. Our hearts are heavy. Our stomachs churn. This is the feeling of wrong. If we have to look away to deal with the feelings it brings up, we know it’s not ok. And yes, there are too many things in our world that make us feel this way. It is too easy to feel overwhelmed by waves of human-made pain and horror. But this time we need to look. We need to feel the pain because we are causing this. If you think of yourself as an American, and I do, then this is being done in our name.And the truth is, as someone once pointed out to me, these kids are Americans too. They may be from Central or South America, but they are Americans, and we need to recognize that pain travels just like pollution. In an age where we can go around the world in a day, where a message is sent in a second, why would we think that pain will remain where it started? Pain won’t stay contained behind borders or walls or wire fences. It may take time for it to spread but then we will wish that we stopped it sooner because we will see that we have forced those children and our children and our grandchildren to deal with the consequences of pain that we created.Our children and grandchildren will see images and hear the stories of how we, the people of the United States of America, harmed children, and when they become aware of this reality, and it will be in the history books, they will ask a simple question. Why? Each of us needs to imagine how we will respond, and if you have an answer that allows you to support this or stand passively by while this is happening, think deeply about whether it will stand the test of time. Think deeply about how you will defend it on your deathbed and beyond. Think also about those who have separated children from their parents, those working at the border who have been the instruments of cruel action. If they are not yet parents, imagine them as new parents holding their child lovingly in their arms. Will political reasoning enable them to justify what they did? Or, looking again into a child’s eyes, will they feel overwhelmed by the gut-wrenching pain of wrong? Will their parenting and families be haunted by their past actions?I know we do not need researchers or mental health professionals to know that this is wrong, but I am both. In over two decades of work as a researcher, therapist, supervisor, consultant, and trainer working with children under age 6 who have experienced trauma, I have been entrusted with over 1000 stories of over 1000 families from around the world. Everything the research, other experts, and the families have taught me makes me know that what we are doing is wrong. Here is what the families and their stories have taught me. When we are little and grown-ups harm us or fail to protect us, without acknowledgment and repair, the effects endure. In the absence of other protective relationships and other models of relationships, these experiences teach us that this is “the way” relationships are. People will leave us. They might harm us. We can’t trust others. These experiences also shape the way we might answer the following questions: Am I capable? Am I valuable? Am I loveable? When the harm is magnified by society, then we are truly stranded. We are without refuge, without protection, without a healthy model of how we deserve to be treated. As child trauma therapists, my colleagues and I spend our days repairing harm. We partner with families. We hear stories of children who have been harmed. We hear stories of parents who have been harmed. We hear stories of the way our systems sometimes supported and often failed families. We also hear the stories of those who have harmed others. Haunted by their own actions some seek support to help their families move from pain and harm to safety and connection. It is hard work, and it is beautiful. When children are able to truly share their experiences with someone who loves them, when they are reconnected with loving arms that now hold and protect them, they blossom. When parents deeply acknowledge their own and their children’s experiences, they breathe and are able to raise their kids in ways they may not have known as children. The feeling in our bodies changes from pain and separation to connection and hope.Across our country, we are starting to hear the stories of the children who have been separated from their families. We are working to repair harm that should never have been caused. In the next 20 years, we expect also to hear the stories of the families on the other side of this tragedy, those who separated children at the border, those who worked in the detention centers. It is hard to harm or witness harm to children and not develop PTSD. Those of us who do this work are also bearing the burden of pain caused by this societal violence. These political actions are breaking the hearts of the children and families, and they are breaking ours at the same time. Therapists, teachers, medical professionals, child welfare workers, attorneys, court personnel and so many more of us, we are also paying the price for these policies, and I imagine we will continue to do for decades.The purpose of society is to protect its members. Throughout history, we have drawn lines defining who we feel is in our circle and who should be under protection. Surely though within our core beliefs we can agree that children are the future of our world, and it is our responsibility as good and loving grown-ups to protect or at the very least to not harm them. It’s 6 am and maybe those kids that we are holding in our hearts are waking up if they even slept at all on the cold, hard floors. They deserve to have someone tell them that the nightmare is over, or at the very least, that grown-ups may have our deeply felt disagreements, but we all agree that children are precious. They are our future, and we will work together and think deeply about how to make their lives and our world more humane and kind. We do this for the sake of the children who are suffering and for the sake of our own children who will also bear the burden of this human-caused pain. We are taking a stand for children.I am writing this letter to represent the voices of my fellow colleagues, and I am inviting those of you who share these views to sign below and add your voices to ours. Share this letter with the politicians who represent your voices and add your thoughts. Let them know that as people in the helping professions, those who work on the frontlines to help families heal from trauma, we will not stand by and let cruelty happen. We will not stand by while our society abuses and harms children. You are not harming children in our name. We do not support policies that harm children, and we will not support those who write, vote for or implement policies that harm children.
